Our Deepest Sympathies

Updated On: Sep 20, 2011 (20:52:00)

Local F-147 regrets to announce the passing of former Assistant Chief David L. Carter. Chief Carter passed away at the age of 86 on September 11, 2011 at Haven Hospice in Edison NJ. Chief Carter was a charter member of Local F-147. Chief Carter helped lay the groundwork for what is now a strong and proud Union.

Before his career as a Federal Firefighter, Chief Carter served proudly on the USS Bunker Hill as a Torpedoman during World War II. He was a lifelong resident of Point Pleasant where he also served as a Volunteer Firefighter with Point Pleasant Fire Company #1. He also served on the NJ State Exempt Firemen's Association, the Sons of the American Revolution, and was a charter member of the V.F.W. Post #4715, Point Pleasant Beach.

Thank you for your service to not only the US Navy and your local community but to our Base and Union as well. Rest in Peace Chief Carter.

Two of Our Own Receive Well Deserved Recognition

Updated On: Apr 10, 2011 (20:45:00)

On February 22nd 2011 F/F Vic Huhn and F/F Frank McCleaster were presented with life saving awards in recognition of actions taken on October 30th 2009. On this date Station 21 with F/F Vic Huhn, F/F Frank McCleaster, F/F Henry Picco and F/F Joe Ciccone responded to the train yard for a report of a man vs. train. Upon arrival the crew found a public works employee lying near a diesel locomotive with a partially severed leg and a crushed foot.

Prior to Station 21s arrival the patient attempted to place tourniquet a on his leg to control the bleeding however the tourniquet was ineffective. Frank and Vic reapplied the tourniquet and continued to monitor the patients vitals while en route the local trauma center. During transport, the patient's vital signs dropped to dangerously low levels. F/F Huhn and McCleaster re-adjusted the turniquet and applied direct pressure to the injured area which allowed the patients vital signs to return to sustainable levels.

As a sign of gratitude, many of the patient's co-workers were present during the ceremony. Frank and Vic were quick to point out during the ceremony that this was a crew effort and that everyone who responded played an important role in saving the patient. It was the quick and efficient assessment and treatment on scene and en route by Frank, Vic, Henry and Joe that ensured the patient's successful transport to the trauma center for further treatment. Click the links below to view a picture from the ceremony and to read the nomination. Great Job Guys!
