It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of retired firefighter and inspector William “Bill” Lester Shaffer, 71, of Howell who passed away on Friday, June 25, 2021 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. He was born and raised in Florida, and had lived in Farmingdale for many years before settling to Howell in 2001. Bill worked for NWS Earle as a Federal Firefighter/ Inspector. A staple in the community he was on the Board of Education for Farmingdale School, member of the Farmingdale Fire Department from 1976-1996, Life Member of the Farmingdale-Howell First Aid Squad, founding member of the Howell Men’s Softball League, Coached Ed Carlton Baseball and Howell Senior League Baseball and Basketball. Bill was Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster for BSA Troop 13 Farmingdale and Cub Master and Assistant Cub Master for Pack #13 Farmingdale. He was honored to be the 1994 Parade Marshall in Farmingdale. A man of great faith, he was a member of the Farmingdale Methodist Church and had taken multiple mission trips including Mexico, Kentucky, and Williamsport. Bill was a sports fanatic who could be found cheering on the Giants, Yankees, Green Bay Packers, and the Florida Gators.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Leigh Shaffer of Howell; children, William Shaffer and his wife, Adriane of Farmingdale and Leslie Keaney and her husband, Adam of Farmingdale; and three grandchildren, Lily, Michael and Aden.
Visitation will be held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his 11:00 AM Funeral Service on Thursday July 1, 2021 at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Howell. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Bill’s name may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
